SUMMARY:

The OTR Company Driver is responsible for the safe, professional, and timely transportation of refrigerated and/or food-grade freight throughout the company’s operating area. The driver operates company-owned or company-authorized equipment under the company’s operating authority and insurance coverage and is expected to comply with all company safety policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Our drivers represent the company to our customers, shippers, receivers, and the motoring public. Professionalism, safety, communication, and proper care of equipment and freight are essential responsibilities of this position.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safely operate assigned commercial motor vehicle and trailer in accordance with company policies and all applicable DOT and FMCSA regulations.
  • Transport refrigerated, frozen, dry, and/or other food-grade commodities as assigned.
  • Maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and all qualifications required for the equipment being operated.
  • Maintain an acceptable driving record and remain eligible to operate under the company’s insurance requirements.
  • Comply with Hours-of-Service regulations and properly use the company’s electronic logging device (ELD).
  • Complete required pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections and promptly report equipment defects or safety concerns.
  • Follow company procedures regarding vehicle maintenance, breakdowns, accidents, cargo claims, and roadside inspections.
  • Protect company equipment from unnecessary damage, abuse, or neglect and maintain the cleanliness and professional appearance of assigned equipment.
  • Follow all procedures regarding food safety, trailer cleanliness, product integrity, seal requirements, and temperature-controlled freight.
  • Verify that refrigerated equipment is operating properly and monitor temperatures as required for the assigned load.
  • Follow shipper, receiver, and customer requirements while maintaining compliance with company safety policies.
  • Properly secure freight when required and ensure cargo is transported in a manner that minimizes the risk of damage, contamination, or loss.
  • Maintain timely communication with dispatch regarding pickups, deliveries, delays, equipment problems, Hours-of-Service concerns, accidents, weather conditions, or other circumstances that could affect the safe and timely completion of a load.
  • Immediately report accidents, incidents, injuries, cargo damage, citations, roadside inspections, or other safety-related events according to company policy.
  • Submit required paperwork, bills of lading, receipts, inspection documents, and other trip documentation accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Maintain professional and courteous conduct when interacting with customers, dispatchers, company personnel, law enforcement, vendors, and the general public.
  • Follow company policies regarding distracted driving, mobile device use, seat belts, drugs and alcohol, speeding, following distance, and other safe-driving practices.
  • Perform other transportation-related duties as reasonably assigned.
DRIVER QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The driver must:
  • Possess a current and valid CDL appropriate for the equipment operated.
  • Meet all applicable DOT/FMCSA driver qualification requirements.
  • Possess a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate when required.
  • Successfully complete company-required pre-employment screening and qualification procedures.
  • Participate in required DOT drug and alcohol testing programs.
  • Maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record and driving history.
  • Meet company and insurance carrier driver eligibility requirements.
  • Have the ability to safely operate tractor-trailer equipment in varying traffic, road, and weather conditions.
  • Be able to read, understand, and comply with shipping documents, safety policies, operating instructions, and applicable regulations.
  • Demonstrate dependable attendance, communication, professionalism, and sound judgment.
FOOD TRANSPORTATION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Because the company specializes in food transportation, drivers are expected to take additional care to protect the safety and integrity of transported products.

Drivers must:

  • Inspect trailers for cleanliness, odors, damage, debris, pests, or other conditions that could affect food-grade freight.
  • Follow required washout and sanitation procedures.
  • Confirm appropriate trailer and refrigeration conditions before loading when applicable.
  • Follow load-specific temperature instructions and promptly report temperature discrepancies or refrigeration-unit problems.
  • Protect trailer seals and follow company/customer seal procedures.
  • Immediately report suspected contamination, product damage, temperature problems, rejected freight, or other conditions that may compromise cargo integrity.
  • Follow company procedures and customer requirements relating to sanitary transportation of food products.
SAFETY EXPECTATIONS:

Safety is a condition of employment and an essential function of this position.

Drivers are expected to exercise good judgment and operate safely at all times. No delivery schedule, customer request, dispatch instruction, or other business consideration takes priority over the safe and lawful operation of a commercial motor vehicle.

Drivers have the responsibility to communicate when road, weather, equipment, fatigue, Hours-of-Service, or other conditions make continued operation unsafe or unlawful.

COMPANY EQUIPMENT:

Company equipment is provided for authorized business purposes. Drivers are responsible for exercising reasonable care of assigned tractors, trailers, refrigeration units, fuel cards, communication devices, permits, and other company property.

Damage, mechanical problems, warning lights, tire issues, refrigeration problems, or other equipment concerns must be reported promptly in accordance with company procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment and physical characteristics are representative of those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. This position may require:

  • Extended periods of sitting and driving.
  • Entering and exiting tractor and trailer equipment.
  • Walking, bending, reaching, climbing, and performing vehicle inspections.
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Handling trailer doors, landing gear, airlines, electrical connections, and other equipment associated with tractor-trailer operations.
  • Working irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended periods away from home based on freight and operational requirements.
